Google launches Santa tracking service

Google Santa Tracker spreads festive joy

Internet users looking to get into the festive spirit have been given a boost by the launch of Google Santa Tracker.

The page currently features a countdown to the departure of Father Christmas on Christmas Eve, and will switch to a tracking service when this countdown concludes. As the clock strikes midnight around the world, the location of Santa and his reindeer will be mapped as they make their annual journey.

The search engine giant has previously worked with North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) who also provide Santa tracking, but this year has decided to launch its own. Google says its version of the service was designed with help from “Santa’s many developer elves” and will include the sleigh dashboard, featuring the “latest in Google Maps technology and sleigh engineering.”

Google to continue festive success

This service from Google is likely to receive great attention, adding to the success it enjoyed this time last year. Christmas Day 2011 saw record breaking Android activations, with the majority of smartphones given as gifts using the operating system.

The Google Santa Tracker service will also be available on a range of their other services, including an Android app and a page on Google+.

Tom Glass, creative director at theEword remarked: “It is always good to see big companies getting into the festive spirit, with Google the first of the major players to announce their Christmas plans. This Santa tracking service is likely to become popular with users young and old, and could well become a very modern Christmas tradition.”
