DeGeneres photo trumps Obama
A star-studded ‘selfie’ from Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres has become the most retweeted image ever, on a night of few shocks at the 2014 Academy Awards.
The chat show host spent part of her evening attempting to organise the record breaking shot, which featured a host of Oscar winners and nominees including Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, as well as best supporting actor and actress winners Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o.
She even mentioned it live onstage in a bid to encourage more Twitter users to share the photo, and it did not take long for her plan to work. In just 40 minutes, the image had surpassed the previous record set by US President Barack Obama upon his re-election in 2012, collecting over a million retweets and briefly causing Twitter to crash.
This had doubled by the end of the ceremony, while DeGeneres gained 1.1 million new followers, taking her to a total of over 26.4 million.
It was also the moment that generated the highest volume of Twitter conversation throughout the ceremony, generating more than 254,000 tweets per minute.
Who was most popular with Twitter users?
Twitter has long since established itself as a medium often used by people as they watch a television show, and the Oscars proved no different.
Gravity took home six awards, which helped it become the most talked about film on the night, while animated blockbuster Frozen was second. Best picture winner 12 Years a Slave was third, followed by Dallas Buyers Club, which took home both major male acting prizes for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.
The Wolf of Wall Street did not win anything, which perhaps surprised some Twitters users as it became the fifth most talked about picture of the night.
Fan favourite Jennifer Lawrence was the most discussed nominee, perhaps in part because she repeated her trick from last year of falling over during the event.
Best director Alfonso Cuaron and best actress Cate Blanchett also featured in the top five, along with Brad Pitt and Gravity’s Sandra Bullock.
