Widespread approval for i

Social media users have responded positively to the launch of the UK’s first new national daily newspaper in more than two decades.

Yesterday saw the debut of i, a tabloid aimed at young adults and lapsed newspaper readers from the team behind the Independent. It is priced at 20p and aims to offer a condensed version of the day’s news, as well as opinion, features, business and sport. It is the first newspaper of its kind to appear since Eddy Shah’s Today and the Independent, which both arrived in 1986.

To promote the launch, an official i Facebook page, Twitter profile and #ilaunch hashtag have been created. By using sentiment tracking software, it is possible to show that i has been largely well received on social media. Twitter Sentiment reveals that 71 per cent of tweets containing ‘ilaunch’ have been positive (see pie chart). On Social Mention, meanwhile, the ratio of positive to negative mentions of the hashtag currently stands at 7:1.
